Marie Davidson debuts new trio L’Œil Nu with “Renegade Breakdown”

Following her announcement that she was retiring from club music.

Marie Davidson has teamed up with Pierre Guerineau and Asaël R Robitaille to form the trio Marie Davidson & L’Œil Nu. They’ve released their debut single, “Renegade Breakdown.”

This new project follows Davidson’s shock announcement last year that she was retiring from club music. The Montreal artist staged her final performance at Montreal’s Red Bull Music Festival. In 2018, she released the acclaimed album Working Class Woman.

The title track of the trio’s debut album out next month, “Renegade Breakdown” exudes ’80s synth pop swagger over slap bass, squelching synths and fuzzy guitars. Davidson’s laconic sense of humor shines through in her lyrics, sung in French and English: “Oh by the way, there are no money makers on this record / This time, I’m exploring the loser’s point of view.”

Though a new group, Marie Davidson & L’Œil Nu are composed of tight-knit collaborators. Guerineau is Davidson’s husband and bandmate in the long-running duo Essaie Pas, who have released a handful of EPs and two studio albums over the past nine years.

“We wanted to make songs, like the music we’ve been enjoying altogether for more than a decade,” Davidson explained of the new project in a press release.

Renegade Breakdown will arrive on September 25 via Ninja Tune. Listen to its title track here:
