Kygo has released “Freedom,” featuring Moroccan-English singer Zak Abel. It’s the lead single off the Norwegian DJ’s forthcoming album Golden Hour.
“Freedom,” a hands-in-the-air anthem, celebrates the joy of finally finding liberation and meaning in a previously empty life.
“You give me something that I can hold on to / A little light when I’m down on my knees / I was so lost in myself when I found you / But in that moment you made me believe,” Abel sings over Kygo’s signature piano-led house production. “You give me freedom, freedom / Freedom I’ve been looking for / Freedom, freedom is you.”
The accompanying music video for “Freedom,” turned out very different from its initial concept: a scenic clip set in the Maldives.
“It was gonna have blue waters and palm trees swaying in the wind. Zak Abel was gonna play guitar by the beach. And I was gonna play the piano in the sunset. None of that happened,” Kygo explained in a disclaimer at the beginning of the video.
The coronavirus pandemic scuppered their plans, and the artists decided to go for a memorable homemade video instead. In the uplifting visual, both Kygo and Abel—evidently suffering from cabin fever—display goofy antics like juggling toilet paper, microwaving fruits, singing to an eggplant and more.
“Freedom” follows Kygo’s recent releases “Like it is” with Zara Larsson and Tyga, and “I’ll Wait” featuring Sasha Sloan. Earlier this year, the DJ also co-wrote and released a tribute to the late Avicii, “Forever Yours.”
