Kygo has released a new remix of Tina Turner’s 1984 classic dance track, “What’s Love Got to Do With it.”
Turner’s collaboration with the Norwegian DJ comes ahead of her 81st birthday later this year, and also marks a brief respite from retirement; she stepped away from recording new music in 2000 and touring in 2009. Kygo’s modern take on the dance classic lays Turner’s powerhouse vocals over sparse electronic pop instrumentals that explode into life for the iconic chorus.
“I couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with Tina Turner, who is an icon that I grew up listening to,” Kygo gushed in a statement. “‘What’s Love Got to Do With it’ is one of my all-time favorite songs so to have a chance to rework it has been a very special moment in my career. I love working around timeless vocals and although it’s challenging to preserve elements of the original track and adding my own touch, I’m extremely happy with how it turned out!”
A year ago, Kygo put his spin on another pop classic when he remixed “Higher Love” by the late Whitney Houston. “What’s Love Got to Do With it” is the DJ’s first single to follow his third album Golden Hour released in May. It featured collaborations with OneRepublic, Valerie Broussard, Zak Abel, Tyga and Zara Larsson.
The music video for Kygo’s new remix, directed by Sarah Bahbah, stars Laura Harrier and Charles Michael Davis as two lovers in a relationship under strain. Watch it here:
