Justice’s “Heavy Metal” MV is a sight to behold

It’s centered on a campus marching band.

The dance music Justice makes sounds very different from the brass-heavy bombast of campus marching bands. But the two improbable worlds collide in the French duo’s video for “Heavy Metal,” which centers on Norfolk State University’s marching band, the Spartan Legion.

The song comes from Woman Worldwide, which was recently nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category. The impressive clip was directed by Filip Nilsson, who met the marching band in question about a year ago.

“We contacted the the marching band leader, William Beathea, and it felt like we all knew at that point that we had to make this work,” Nilsson said in a press statement. “I wanted his marching band of 220 people to play the track as well as create a customized choreography. We knew it would be far from easy to pull it off.”

“After months of preparation and schedule changes due to the hurricane season, myself and DP [director of photography] Steve Annis finally had five days of full rehearsals with the marching band before we starting shooting. It was a very strong and emotional experience working with these musicians and dancers,” he said.
