Chicago DJ Honey Dijon has released the first preview of her upcoming album Black Girl Magic: “Not About You,” featuring Atlanta singer Hadiya George.
The track, Honey Dijon said in a statement, “is about the communal love and joy we all experience on the dancefloor as one. The dancefloor is a place to leave all labels, inhibitions, and prejudices behind. A place to create dreams and manifest desires. After all, it’s not about me, it’s not about you, it’s about us!”
“Not About You” arrived with a music video, directed and animated by Ciaran McCusker, which tells the story of a nightclub and its community, consisting mainly of queer people of color, protecting themselves against violent policemen who attempt to destroy their safe space. It ends on a cliffhanger—and hints at a saga unfolding over the course of Black Girl Magic’s music videos.
Honey Dijon’s sophomore album, Black Girl Magic comes three years after her debut statement The Best of Both Worlds. Though a release date for the album has not been confirmed, a second track “Le Femme Fantastique” (featuring Josh Caffe) will drop this Friday.
