Flying Lotus has dropped two new tracks: “Black Gold” featuring frequent collaborator Thundercat and “Between Memories” featuring vocalist Niki Randa.
The two tracks will play over the opening and closing credits for Yasuke, an original Netflix anime series premiering next week. Created by LeSean Thomas of Legend of Korra fame and featuring LaKeith Stanfield as lead actor, Yasuke’s plot is inspired by the real-life story of an African samurai in 16th century Japan. FlyLo serves as an executive producer for the production, consulting on the story and scoring the series.
The two new FlyLo songs evoke mystique fit for Yasuke’s setting. On “Black Gold,” swelling strings and Thundercat’s luscious bass grooves dramatically soundtrack the protagonist’s unique point of view: “A world so brand-new, endless possibilities / A whole new identity / Can’t you see? Black gold of the sun / Love and loyalty, trust and honesty.” Meanwhile, on “Between Memories” Randa delivers a contemplative send-off above swirling synths and shuffling drums. “A warning, no waiting / We’re off to leave now / Don’t worry ’bout the weather, we’re setting off together,” she croons.
Both Thundercat and Flying Lotus have shared a long affinity with anime. Beyond scoring bumper music for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programs, the Los Angeles producer also contributed soundtracks to 2019’s Netflix original Carole and Tuesday, and scored auteur Shinichi Watanabe’s 2017 short film, Blade Runner Black Out 2022.
“[LeSean Thomas] and I talked about being outsiders in anime,” FlyLo commented in a press release on his involvement with Yasuke. “‘Why aren’t more Black kids trying to do this? Why is it so out of the ordinary?’ He was saying that it’s because they don’t have examples.”
