Hear Arca’s glitchy new single, “Mequetrefe”

From her new album, ‘KiCk i,’ out next week.

Experimental electronic artist Arca has released “Mequetrefe,” a new single from her upcoming album KiCk i.

The track showcases the Venezuela-born producer’s love of glitchy, mutating soundscapes with the potential to both thrill and terrify. Its title is a derogatory term for bum or good-for-nothing in Spanish, and is a word that Arca heard often while growing up.

“The song ‘Mequetrefe’ invokes the tenderness behind expressing who you are without shame, and the confidence and bravery it requires, because expression of gender-nonconforming self-states in a public space can often result in static within your environment,” she said in a statement.

KiCk i, the follow-up to Arca’s self-titled 2017 album, is her fourth studio album. It marks her first time inviting featured artists into the fold, with appearances from Björk, Rosalía, Shygirl and SOPHIE.
