Flying Lotus makes his grand return with the star-studded ‘Flamagra’

Steven Ellison pulled out all the stops on this album.

After five years knee-deep in other creative endeavors, Flying Lotus—aka Steven Ellison—has finally returned with a new, star-studded album, Flamagra.

The Brainfeeder Records head honcho connected with some titans of culture for the generous, 27-track album. Cowboy Bebop’s Shinichiro Watanabe helmed his music video for the Anderson .Paak collab “More,” while David Lynch contributed a spine-chilling spoken word piece to “Fire is Coming.” Marquee names like George Clinton, Solange, Denzel Curry and Tierra Whack appear elsewhere on the album.

As its title suggests, fire was a central theme for this album. “A lot of that imagery has been in my head: The things that [fire] does, and how much we need fire and how much we hate fire, is all important,” Flylo told Billboard. “I was really inspired by the idea of: What if there’s a very contained fire in Los Angeles that couldn’t be put out, and what would that be like as a thing for the city, or any American city?”
