Dan Deacon has announced his new album, Mystic Familiar, with the new single, “Sat By a Tree.”
The energetic dance track arrived alongside a spine-chilling music video that—fair warning—is not for the squeamish. In the stop-motion clip, maggots and flies slowly devour the decomposing body of a woman who’s still alive. The creepy crawlies soon break the body down to just a skeleton, which returns to the earth, a patch of grass growing in its place.
“A lot of my work focuses on death,” Deacon revealed in a behind-the-scenes video. “It’s pretty upbeat music most of the time, but I try not to see death exclusively in this macabre sense. So, I just like playing with the concept and writing about it a lot.”
Mystic Familiar is Deacon’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2015 LP Gliss Riffer. The new album arrives January 31, 2020 via Domino Records.
