South African producer Black Coffee has continued to tease his upcoming album Subconsciously with a brand-new single, “You Need Me” featuring Maxine Ashley and Sun-El Musician.
The gorgeous track sets Ashley’s vocals at the forefront as disjointed piano progressions twinkle sporadically throughout. Black Coffee works hard alongside Sun-El Musician to layer intricate instrumentals without overloading the song’s raw, emotive soundscape.
“You Need Me” is just one of the many collab-heavy tracks on Subconsciously. Preceding singles “LaLaLa” and “10 Missed Calls” feature Usher and Pharrell Williams respectively, while David Guetta, Diplo, RY X and Sabrina Claudio appear elsewhere on Subconsciously.
Black Coffee’s previous album, Pieces of Me, arrived in 2015 and quickly landed the producer high-profile collaborations with pop icons such as Drake and Alicia Keys. In 2019, Black Coffee launched his Africa is Not a Jungle project, a platform which aims to showcase what African producers and DJs can bring to the international music scene.
“It’s about having our own stage and trying to pioneer a certain sound,” Black Coffee told Mixmag, “but with a global appeal on the dance scene … I wanted to showcase some of this music, not just in Europe but also in South Africa, where these artists are still underground. The platform will showcase them first at home, and make sure we create solid roots as we grow outside the continent.”
Subconsciously is locked in for a February 5 release via Ultra Records. Listen to “You Need Me” below:
