British producer Actress—real name Darren Cunningham—has released a short film inspired by his recently released album Karma & Desire and starring collaborators Sampha, Yves Tumor and more.
The short film, which shares a title with the album, was directed by Lee Bootee. Its scenes of remote nature and cityscapes under rich purple hues serve as a background to the enigmatic narrative of love, espionage and “a missed connection,” according to the visual’s press release. Album guests Zsela, Sampha, Yves Tumor and Aura T-09 all star in the film alongside Cunningham himself.
The album is “a romantic tragedy set between the heavens and the underworld,” Cunningham said in a statement. The British producer went on to explain that Karma & Desire focuses on “the same sort of things that I like to talk about—love, death, technology, the questioning of one’s being.”
Karma & Desire is Cunningham’s first major Actress release since 2017’s AZD. The producer also released 88 earlier this year, an album that was only temporarily available via Bandcamp. Fans could download the album for free by entering a secret code on Cunningham’s website, but the functionality has since been removed.
