Maren Morris performed her protest anthem “Better Than We Found it” for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week.
Morris took the Colbert opportunity to deliver a stunning live version of “Better Than We Found it,” which is her latest release. While the performance still packs the punch found on Morris’ studio version, the singer deftly contrasts the explosive full-band choruses with emotional, breathy vocals and tender acoustic guitars on the verses.
Morris said she envisioned “Better Than We Found it” as a protest song in the lineage of those penned by Bob Dylan and Nina Simone. The single arrived in October alongside a moving music video containing personal stories of police brutality and social injustice from Nashville natives and footage from the Black Lives Matter protests.
“I think the world right now is sort of in a perpetual mourning period and I wanted to have a song that had weight but also had hope,” Morris previously explained in a statement accompanying the song. “I still have hope for this country and for the future of it, and as a new mother I wanted to promise my son that I’m going to do everything in my power to leave this world better than the one I came into and the one I see right now.”
Girl, Morris’ most recent studio album, arrived in 2019. It featured collaborations with Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby and Brothers Osbourne. Catch Morris’ performance of “Better Than We Found it” here:
