Mickey Guyton is back with “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?,” a track that is both emotional and empowering.
“What are you gonna tell her when she’s wrong? / Will you just shrug and say it’s been that way all along? / What are you gonna tell her when she figures out / That all this time you built her up just so the world can let her down?” Guyton sings, confronting the existing double standards in the world and country music head on.
Guyton debuted the ballad live last month at her label UMG Nashville’s luncheon showcase during Country Radio Seminar, an annual industry event for radio programmers and record labels. She gained a standing ovation and roaring applause from the venue. Watch that performance below:
Guyton told CMT in a recent interview that this song, penned with fellow writers Victoria Banks, Karen Kosowski and Emma-Lee, came about as a result of a writing session where the four writers were “at our lowest of lows and wanting something to change.”
And, the title came from Guyton tearfully asking Banks the question: “What are you gonna tell your daughters when they grow up if this doesn’t change?”
“This song is a call to action because there is so much injustice happening in this world, there is so much injustice happening in country music,” the 36-year-old added. “Women are so underrepresented. We’re just basically not even there, and that is a problem because half the world is women.”
