Canadian alt-country singer Kathleen Edwards has returned from a five-year hiatus with “It’s Christmastime (Let’s Just Survive).”

On the tongue-in-cheek song, Edwards describes what Christmas is really like at her home, which includes drunk relatives, bad presents and a heated game of Scrabble. “Thanks for the self-help book but, I have it already / I got it last year when I was dating that loser Jerry / And I get that you’re lovin’ the new John Mayer / But I don’t even have a CD player,” she sings.

“I was like, ‘None of these [songs on the radio] are actually what Christmas is like.’ Christmas is a fucking zoo,” she told Rolling Stone. “You spend too much. You fucking expect too much. Your parents. There’s always the drama of your dysfunctional fucking family. I was like, ‘How come there are no songs about that?’”

“It’s Christmastime (Let’s Just Survive)” is Edwards’ first solo release since her 2013 cover of Roxette’s 1990 hit “It Must Have Been Love.” The singer is currently working on her fifth studio album, the follow-up to 2012’s Voyageur.
