Kacey Musgraves and Willie Nelson recently performed as part of a live-streamed fundraiser for Texas hosted by actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila.
The We’re Texas benefit concert took place on Sunday (March 21) to raise funds for Texans affected by the severe storms that devastated parts of the state in February.
Musgraves offered a gorgeous cover of Nelson’s “On the Road Again,” while Nelson delivered an enthralling rendition of his 1968 Texas in My Soul track “Beautiful Texas,” which was originally written by Wilbert Lee O’Daniel some decades prior. During her time on-screen, Musgraves revealed that she was recruited for the relief event via a late-night call from McConaughey himself.
“A lot of Texans are hurting right now,” McConaughey said in a statement. “After the disaster of the worst freeze here in over 70 years, so many are still without clean water, and unable to repair water damage that has made their homes unlivable… The We’re Texas virtual event features an all-star line-up of Texas talent for a night to restore Texas. It’s time.”
A number of stellar artists joined Musgraves and Nelson on the line-up. Some of the highlights ranged from Post Malone covering Brad Paisley and Sturgill Simpson to Khalid performing his American Teen album closer “Angels” and Miranda Lambert playing her 2009 single “Whole Lotta Woman”. Actors Jamie Foxx, Renee Zellweger and Woody Harrelson also made appearances during the 134-minute show.
The funds raised by the concert went to McConaughey’s Just Keep Livin’ Foundation and its Texas Relief Fund, which will be routing money to organisations helping those in need across Texas.
