Josh Turner shares new song, “Country State of Mind”

It’s the title track of his upcoming album.

Josh Turner has announced his eighth studio album, Country State of Mind, with the release of its title track.

The 12-track project will feature collaborations with artists such as Randy Travis, John Anderson and Maddie & Tae. It will also include covers of traditional country songs that influenced Turner’s artistry and love for country music. On this release, Turner will particularly highlight his personal “Mount Rushmore” of country: Travis, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, John Anderson and Vern Gosdin.

“I’ve always said that any song you hear coming from my voice, you’re going to hear bits and pieces of those five guys,” Turner said in a press release. “They taught me how to be Josh Turner.”

The title track, “Country State of Mind,”was originally recorded by Hank Williams Junior. Turner’s rendition features fellow country artist Chris Janson. The two had shared a stage at a guitar pull radio show, and when Janson covered it, Turner spontaneously jumped in to harmonize—something he said he doesn’t usually do unless asked to.

He explained: “That night, I couldn’t help myself. When he started singing ‘Country State of Mind,’ I was sitting right next to him and I just chimed in. I started singing harmony on it. He looked over like, ‘Holy crap. Let’s keep doing this.’ He was loving it, and the crowd went nuts.”

“So when I ended up deciding to do this song on the record, I was like, I’ve got to have Chris come in and sing on this, you know? It’s just two good ol’ country boys singing on a country song and having a good time.”

“‘Country State of Mind’ for me was part of that soundtrack of my life growing up in rural South Carolina,” Turner added. “I could just relate to so many lines in this song. Hank Williams Junior’s music has always had a real attitude to it, and I’ve always loved that and just really felt like this record could use some of that.”

Country State of Mind follows Turner’s 2018 gospel album, I Serve a Savior. It included popular hymns like “I Saw the Light,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” as well as a live version of Turner’s signature song, “Long Black Train.”

Turner’s new album is out August 21. Listen to his cover of “Country State of Mind” below:
