Hear Goshen Electric Co cover Jason Molina’s “The Gray Tower”

A tribute project by Strand of Oaks and Magnolia Electric Co.

Strand of Oaks’ Timothy Showalter and the remaining members of Magnolia Electric Co have joined forces to pay tribute to the late Jason Molina, who fronted the latter band.

They’ve released a rendition of “The Gray Tower” as Goshen Electric Co—Showalter hails from Goshen, Indiana—that is the first of two covers to be released as a seven-inch on Molina’s former label, Secretly Canadian.

The late musician released “The Gray Tower” in 2002 as a standalone single under his Songs: Ohia moniker. It’s a simple acoustic number, featuring just guitar, Molina’s voice and a female backing vocalist. But Goshen Electric Co have, as you might expect, gone ahead with a full band arrangement, complete with drums and lap steel, that still preserves the original’s emotional heft.

“It’s a heavy responsibility to try and sing Jason’s songs,” Showalter tweeted. “I hope I did him proud.” He also revealed that “The Gray Tower” was recorded in two takes, noting, “It’s not supposed to happen this smoothly, but it did. Mainly because we have all lived these songs, and for each of us it came so naturally.”

The Goshen Electric Co seven-inch is out November 2. In the meantime, watch the black-and-white video for “The Gray Tower,” shot by Colin Kerrigan and Rocco Avallone:
