Dylan Scott has dropped a cover of the late Keith Whitley’s 1989 song, “Between an Old Memory and Me.”

On the sentimental track, Scott sings over a tender soundscape of piano chords, guitar and pedal steel. “All my friends tell me that I’m a fool for holding on / I know they’re trying to help me but I’ve been a fool too long,” he croons.

“The first thing was the tone of his voice. That really hooked me,” Scott told Billboard of his love of Whitley. “When I started playing guitar, I would learn guitar to his music. Then when I started writing music and started diving into his lyrics I thought, ‘Man, his lyrics are real.’ That spoke to me.”

Scott’s version of “Between an Old Memory and Me” is the first taste of his upcoming EP, An Old Memory, a seven-song collection of Whitley covers in honor of the late country singer. The EP is due out August 16 via Curb Records.
