Dolly Parton reworks “9 to 5” for the 21st century

The country music icon flips her hit around for Squarespace’s 2021 Super Bowl commercial.

Dolly Parton has updated her iconic single “9 to 5” for Squarespace’s 2021 Super Bowl commercial.

It goes without saying that the landscape of the professional workspace has changed dramatically since Parton released her 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs single in 1980. Parton gives the classic a contemporary facelift on “5 to 9”—a nod to entrepreneurs who continue working after business hours in order to make their vision come true.

“Working 5 to 9, you’ve got passion and a vision / Cuz it’s hustlin’ time, whole new way to make a livin’ / Gonna change your life, do something that gives it meaning / With a website that is worthy of your dreaming,” Parton sings on “5 to 9,” promoting Squarespace’s website-building services in the process.

The Super Bowl ad was helmed by La La Land and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle, who quickly builds a dreary picture of office work until 5pm rolls around. Then, color fills the screen as entrepreneurs are depicted fervently chasing their dreams—with time for some dancing, of course.

A snippet of the song is included in the extended advertisement, though the full version is now available on streaming services. The Super Bowl LV match, which took place on Sunday, featured a halftime show by The Weeknd and other performances by Jazmine Sullivan, Eric Church and HER.
