The Dixie Chicks change group name to The Chicks

They also shared a new song, “March March.”

The Dixie Chicks have officially changed their group name to The Chicks.

The country trio—comprising Natalie Maines, Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Strayer—announced their new moniker on their website and social media accounts yesterday (June 25). “We want to meet this moment,” read the brief statement on the homepage of The Chicks’ website.

In a supplementary statement provided by the group’s press representative, the trio added, “A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to The Chicks of [New Zealand] for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock! — Emily, Natalie and Martie”

The Chicks aren’t the first group to change their name this month. Earlier, Lady A (formerly Lady Antebellum) announced their new name because of the word’s strong association to pre-Civil War American history, a period marked by the enslavement of Black people.

The Chicks’ new name arrived alongside an unapologetic new song, “March March.” The protest track coincides with the present political and social upheaval in America. Its accompanying music video also features footage of various riots and protests across America’s history.

“Standing with Emma and our sons and daughters / Watchin’ our youth have to solve our problems / I’ll follow them so who’s comin’ with me? March, march to my own drum March, march to my own drum / Hey, hey, I’m an army of one,” The Chicks sing on the anthemic song.

Prior to this, The Chicks released the songs “Julianna Calm Down” and “Gaslighter.” All three tracks are off their highly anticipated comeback album Gaslighter, due out July 17. The project was initially slated to drop on May 1, but was delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
