Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, otherwise known as Dan + Shay, have released their highly anticipated new single, “I Should Probably Go to Bed.”
On the heart-rending ballad, the duo lament a heartbreak and resist giving into the urge to get in touch with an ex. “So I should probably go to bed / I should probably turn off my phone / I should quit while I’m ahead / I should probably leave you alone,” Mooney belts emotionally on the chorus as Smyers harmonizes. “’Cause I know in the mornin’ / I’ll be callin’ / Sayin’ ‘sorry’ for the things I said / So, I should probably go to bed.”
The track was solely produced by Smyers, who played every instrument and recorded it at his home studio in Nashville, Tennessee.
“This sentiment, this hook, we’ve had it in our phones for a long time. We were all pulling from past experiences and stirring them up in a pot and out came this song,” Smyers said of the song in an interview with People. “I think a lot of people can relate to it, whether it’s a past relationship that you can’t get over or whether it’s some other temptation that’s pulling you and rendering you defenseless. Whatever it is, I feel like we’ve all gone through it in some way, shape or form.”
The country duo also coupled the song’s release with a cinematic music video. The suspenseful clip, directed by P Tracy, brings the tune to life. Both Shay and Mooney experience a dramatic uprooting of their home, and ironically, the apocalyptic scene prevents a heartbroken Mooney from going to bed.
“I Should Probably Go to Bed” follows Dan + Shay’s 2019 smash collab with Justin Bieber, “10,000 Hours.” The duo’s last album was their 2018 self-titled record, which spawned the country radio staples “Speechless,” “All to Myself” and “Tequila.”
