Chris Stapleton recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform the ballad “When I’m With You” with his wife Morgane Stapleton.
Stapleton performed the track, taken from his album Starting Over, in a studio amid an enviable collection of instruments. Crisp acoustic guitar and a restrained rhythm section courtesy of his backing band ferried the ballad along, as he focused on delivering mesmerizing harmonies with Morgane.
The Fallon appearance followed Stapleton’s performance of “Devil Always Made Me Think Twice” for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. His fourth studio album to date, Starting Over arrived in November last year, debuting at the top of Billboard’s US Top Country Albums chart. In addition to 11 original songs, it also featured covers of John Fogerty’s memorable slide guitar track “Joy of My Life” and Guy Clark’s “Worry B Gone” and “Old Friends.”
“When they listen to this record, I hope people will come away from it putting all of the noise of the world out to the peripheral for a minute,” Stapleton said of Starting Over to Apple Music. “Maybe they’ll get in it and find something that speaks to them, feel something, have a good time, cry, get mad, be in love… maybe they will remember some of those things that have been hard to find.”
