Chris Stapleton drops raucous new song “Arkansas”

He co-wrote the ‘Starting Over’ single with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell.

Chris Stapleton has shared howling new single “Arkansas,” the third track to be cut from his forthcoming LP Starting Over.

Stapleton delivers burly guitar riffs and roaring choruses on his tribute to the Natural State, contrasting heavily with the bluesy balladry of preceding single “Cold.” If these advance singles (including the title track) are anything to go by, Starting Over is shaping up to be a diverse collection of material from the Nashville artist.

Stapleton co-wrote “Arkansas” with the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, who performed extensively with Tom Petty throughout the late musician’s career. Fellow Heartbreakers member Benmont Tench also joined Stapleton’s recording band for Starting Over alongside mainstay members Derek Mixon on percussion and bassist JT Cure.

As a big fan of Petty, working with the Heartbreakers members was a massive moment for Stapleton. “I can safely say that no other musical influence is as ever present in my mind,” Stapleton wrote on Instagram. “The words that I choose and the notes that I play and sing are firmly rooted in listening to his records. I’m forever grateful for the moments our musical paths crossed.”

Starting Over will arrive on November 13. Listen to “Arkansas” below:
