Carrie Underwood sings her lungs out in new single, “Cry Pretty”

The first taste of her highly anticipated sixth studio album has all the feels—and then some.

Carrie Underwood’s had a pretty rough couple of months. After taking a nasty tumble outside her Nashville home, the country superstar had to undergo emergency surgery. She’s been hiding out of the public eye ever since, but is now ready to make her return to music—and she’s poured some of that hurt and healing into a brand-new track.

“Cry Pretty” was co-penned by long-time collaborator Hillary Lindsey, as well as Liz Rose, Lori McKenna and Underwood herself. It’s an emotional power ballad (with a killer key change) that’s built around the simple truth: “When things get ugly, you just gotta face that you can’t cry pretty.” Preach ?

But no matter what she’s been through, one thing hasn’t changed: Her voice is as strong as ever, and we’re glad to have it back.
