Carrie Underwood honors women at CMT Artists of the Year

With assistance from Maddie & Tae and Runaway June.

This year’s edition of CMT Artists of the Year, which aired on Wednesday, celebrated women in the country genre. And what better way to mark the occasion than to get country’s most beloved female artist, Carrie Underwood, to honor her fellow artists.

Underwood, who was joined by up-and-comers Maddie & Tae and musical trio Runaway June, performed a medley of hits by the likes of Shania Twain and Dolly Parton. The six-minute-long performance opened with Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man.” “Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman,” Underwood crooned before she knowingly added: “Right? Am I right, ladies?”

Other songs included Faith Hill’s “Wild One,” Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” and Reba’s “Why Haven’t I Heard from You.” Underwood wrapped up the performance with her own song, “Cry Pretty.”
