“What happens in a small town, stays in a small town,” Brantley Gilbert claims on his new song, featuring Canadian songbird Lindsay Ell.
Titled “What Happens in a Small Town,” the melancholic country ballad was penned by Gilbert with hitmakers Brock Berryhill, Josh Dunne and ACM Awards Songwriter of the Year recipient, Rhett Atkins. On it, Gilbert looks back on a former relationship, reminiscing about attending football games together and hanging out at their favorite bar. Ell joins him later on the chorus to lend her dreamy vocals and back him up on guitar.
In a recent interview with Taste of Country, Gilbert revealed that the song was based on the singer’s on-and-off relationship with his wife, Amber Cochran. “That’s one of the great things about being in a relationship with a goodbye in it,” he said. “It’s easy to write those break-up songs when you know how it ends.”
“What Happens in a Small Town” is the country rocker’s follow-up to his fourth studio album, The Devil Don’t Sleep, which arrived last year.
