After releasing pro-choice ballad “The Problem” last year with husband Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires has recruited an incredible list of female musicians for an emotional new version.
Cyndi Lauper, K.Flay, Angie Stone, Linda Perry, Valerie June, Nona Hendryx, Peaches and Morgane Stapleton join Shires for the new version, which is titled “Our Problem.” The track was released last week to mark the 48th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the milestone court case that legalized abortion in the United States of America.
“[‘Our Problem’] brought me to tears,” Lauper shared on Instagram. “Literally. It reminded me so much of ‘Sally’s Pigeons’ but in that song, Sally was completely alone and it cost her her life. Can you imagine having the unconditional support of even just one person? Life-changing. At 17 I read a book called Sisterhood is Powerful. I’ve always wished that there were more women to stand shoulder to shoulder with and here I am. I’m so honored to be a part of ‘Our Problem’ and to stand with my sisters for this important song.”
The new take on “The Problem” features a notable lyrical shift: “Our Problem” plays out as an uplifting conversation among a community of women, who discuss the main character’s now-unsupportive partner. Following the release of “Our Problem,” Shires appeared with Isbell on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform their original version. A neon sign that reads “I’m on your side” took centre stage, while Shires wore a “My body, My choice” sweater.
